Amavida Coffee Roasters Solar Panels on Rooftop at their roaster in Santa Rosa Beach, FL.

⚡ An Electric Journey: Brewing a Brighter Future with Coffee

When we first started Amavida, we were driven by a vision: great coffee, made with care—for people and the planet. But the road to sustainability isn’t paved all at once. It’s built slowly, like a good cup of coffee. One thoughtful decision at a time.

Some of those decisions were easy to spot—like switching to compostable cups or sourcing organic, fair trade beans. Others were quieter, less glamorous, and a lot more complex. Like electricity. Energy. Carbon. Kilowatts.

But those quiet choices matter. And that’s what this story is about: how we’ve taken responsibility for the electricity that powers our roasters, our cafes, and even our delivery vans. Because the energy that moves Amavida—shouldn’t move the climate crisis forward.

☕ From Certification to Curiosity

We started paying closer attention to electricity after becoming a Certified B Corporation. Going through that process wasn’t just about checking boxes—it challenged us to look harder at what we could do better.

Electricity was one of those things. It seemed small at first. Invisible, even. But it powers everything. So we made a note: “Offset electricity use. Come back to this.”

And we did.

🔌 Discovering Arcadia (Now Sol)

Soon after, we found a service called Arcadia Power (now known as Sol). It let us plug in our utility accounts and match our electricity use with renewable energy credits from wind and solar farms.

It was simple to start. But we kept going. As we opened new cafes, we added them to the platform. As we grew, so did our offsets.

That’s when this stopped being just a “good idea,” and became a practice.

🧠 Designing for Efficiency

Of course, offsetting is only part of the story.

We’ve made lots of small changes that add up to a big difference. When we built out our roasting facility, we thought carefully about:

  • What kind of lights we used
  • How our floor plan handled heat and airflow
  • Choosing a Loring Smart Roaster—one of the most efficient machines in the industry

These aren’t flashy upgrades. But they’re the kind of improvements that show up in your electric bill. And more importantly—in your carbon footprint.

☀️ Solar-Powered Roasting

In 2022, we took a leap we’d dreamed about for a long time: solar panels on the roof of our roastery.

That moment changed everything. We weren’t just offsetting—we were generating clean power. Right here in Florida. Right where we roast your coffee.

It wasn’t a quick fix. It took planning, investment, and more than a few conversations with electricians. But it was worth it.

🚚 Electric Delivery? Yes, Please.

A few years ago, we also started transitioning our delivery vehicles to electric and hybrid models.

The goal wasn’t just about saving money on gas (though that’s a bonus). It was about making our entire supply chain cleaner, especially in our local communities.

Here on the Gulf Coast, where sea breezes blow and the sun shines strong, air quality matters. And every electric delivery we make helps keep it a little cleaner.

We’ll share more soon from the team who manages these vehicles—how it works, what’s tricky, and how it feels to make climate-conscious deliveries every day.

🌿 Coffee That Powers Change

As we’ve made these shifts behind the scenes, we’ve also tried to bring our customers along with us—through blends that tell the story.

Blends like:

  • Oceans Blend
  • Happy Whales
  • Save Our Sea Turtles

These aren’t just poetic names. They’re reminders that every purchase you make can fund something bigger—whether it’s clean electricity, carbon accountability, or ocean conservation.

📈 So What’s Next?

We’re still learning, still measuring, and still improving.

As a Florida Benefit Corporation, we take time each year to reflect, assess our environmental impact, and share it with our community. Right now, we’re working on:

  • Measuring our 2024 CO₂ emissions
  • Preparing a 2024–2025 Sustainability Report
  • Continuing to expand electric transportation and clean energy solutions

🙏 A Big Thanks

None of this works without the people who believe in the big picture—and sweat the small stuff.

  • Our warehouse and roasting team, who reuse packing materials and switch off what’s not in use
  • Our interns and staff, who’ve tracked energy usage and carbon metrics with grit and heart
  • Our vendors, who offer sustainable packaging and smart delivery options
  • And you—our customers—who bring your own mugs, make mindful choices, and support our mission with every sip

This journey isn’t over. But it’s worth taking.
One plug, one panel, one delivery at a time.

☕ Thanks for being part of it.
